Visitor Info
Reading’s history dates back to the 8th century, originally known as Readingum, named after the Anglo-Saxon tribe Readingas, meaning “Reada’s People.” The town’s significance grew with the founding of Reading Abbey in 1121 by King Henry I, which became one of England’s wealthiest religious institutions.
Though the abbey declined after the dissolution of monasteries under Henry VIII, Reading thrived as a market town. In the 19th century, it industrialised rapidly, becoming a hub for ironworks, brewing, and biscuit production, notably with Huntley & Palmers, once the world’s largest biscuit manufacturer.
Today, Reading is a modern, vibrant town known for its commercial and technological sectors, as well as its cultural events like the Reading Festival, reflecting its evolution from a medieval settlement to a bustling urban centre.
